You can’t expect people to get things right the first time. Especially when it comes to games. A company has to get its feet wet before really coming into their own and creating a classic game.

Early last year, IO Interactive released a game called Hitman: Codename 47, a unique shooter that had you playing the role of, surprise, surprise, a hitman. The concept was great, the graphics engine impressive, and the initial gameplay fantastic. Unfortunately, that game had a few snags, most notably the inability to save a game in mission, and some rather quirky game issues that just didn’t seem to make sense. IO Interactive were a bunch of newbies, so you can chalk that up to experience.

Now, we have the demo for Hitman 2, the sequel that is supposed to set the wrongs right. Immediately upon starting the game, you get to see that the engine has been tweaked, and runs smoothly. On a P-III 733 system with a GeForce2 GTS card, the game ran fast at 1280X1024, with no slowdown whatsoever. The colors are rich, and the use of hardware T & L is quite notable. From a graphical standpoint, this game is a nice update from last year’s version.

Of course, graphics mean little if the gameplay and technical issues aren’t fixed. Being that this is a demo, it’s tough to tell what will be addressed in the final release. So far, however, things seem pretty good. The stealth aspect, which was highlighted in last year’s release, is even more important that it was before. You can’t walk into the mission with guns smoking, because you’ll end up with more lead than your body needs in no time. You have to be smart, quick, and innovative. It’s what attracted me to the first game, and it seems to be in place here in the sequel.

One impressive thing about this demo is that it doesn’t feel like one. It seems like a demo that was released after the game was released, to entice people to buy. Everything is nicely polished, and the soundtrack is quite good. I know this isn’t the final version, but it plays like it is. I didn’t encounter any glitches or hang-ups. This is how a demo should be released. Four out of the last five I have played have given me problems. It’s nice to see that someone can get it right.

If you didn’t play the first game, then you’re in for a treat. Hitman 2 combines the best elements of the first person shooter, and combines them with the stealth-type gameplay of Metal Gear Solid, or Rogue Spear.

Realism is the key here. You can’t take much of a beating, and you need to be crafty to survive. The fastest mouse-clicker doesn’t win here. You have to knock people out, steal their clothes, and stow away their bodies so their friends don’t find the carcass. Your enemies are smart, and they’ll call in the cavalry if they see something’s up. There’s plenty of tension here, to quote one of our other reviewers. You just get the feeling that a lot is on the line, and you need to act fast.

In all, this is a highly entertaining, fast-paced demo. If you like action and are tired of the relentless ’shoot-everything’ games that for some reason are still around, this is different. It’s immersive, impressive, and entertaining. IO Interactive seems to be on track to right the wrongs of their first release in this series. This game is going to be a killer when it is released. I highly recommend you give it a whirl. You won’t regret it.
