As the star of a fantastic new TV show, cameras will track your every move as you set your fiendish traps. But beware of watchful neighbours and alert guard dogs; if they catch you then the show will be taken off air.DEMO REVIEW
Neighbours From Hell is part puzzle game and part cartoon sitcom. You play the part of Woody, a decent bloke who has finally had enough of his abusive neighbor, Flabby Fatso. Your revenge takes the form of sneaking around your neighbors house to play cartoon-style practical jokes on him.

Being a practical joker is fun. The tools at your disposal are things like bars of soap, fireworks, mouse traps, and marbles. Your goal is to use these to create as much mischief as possible, making your neighbor more and more angry as you progress. The madder Mr. Fatso gets, the better ratings you get for your show.

At the same time, youll have to use stealthy maneuvering inside the house so you dont get caught by the neighbor or his dog. Getting caught is bad, as it will result in the cancellation of your show. (In gamer terms, youll have to restart the level.)

You accomplish your pranks in adventure-game style: select an item from your inventory and use it on something in the environment, such as the microwave or the toilet. The pranks are pre-determined, so you dont really get to use any creativity in outwitting your neighbor.

Instead, your job is to figure out what inventory items are supposed to work with which bits of scenery. (Can you put the mousetrap in the chair, so the neighbor sits on it? Nope…it has to go in the mailbox.)

Still, these puzzles are pretty logical, and the fact that you have to time your movements to match your neighbors routine adds another level of strategy. Plus its fun to watch Mr. Fatso fall victim to the variety of cruel tricks you will heap upon him.

The demo includes two levels from the 14 in the full game, plus a series of tutorials that do a good job of teaching you to play.

The game doesnt offer much in the way of replayability, since there is only one way to beat each level (though you can accomplish the various pranks in whatever order you like, and its more fun watching your neighbors anger meter rise rapidly after you string several pranks together in a short span of time).

So, even allowing for a few replays, most players will not get more than an hour of play out of this demo before theyve done everything worth doing.

Controlling the game is straightforward, using the mouse to move Woody around and select items. My only complaint in this department is that the interior of the house is too large to fit on screen all at once, so you have to do a lot of scrolling to keep an eye on everything going on.

The ability to run the game in a higher resolution and view the whole house at once would be a welcome addition–no resolution change is allowed in the demo. You also cant save the game during a level, but the levels are so short you wont really feel the need to.

The graphics are comical, stylish, and effective. You wont see lens flares or MIP mapping in Woodys 2D world, but the visuals are suitable for a cartoonish sitcom. More than anything, the animation resembles that of the claymation Wallace & Gromit films.

The neighbors apartment is detailed and realistic-looking (in a made-from-clay kind of way), and the animations of Woody pulling pranks and the neighbor blowing his top are entertaining.

Sound and music are effective elements in the game, too. Youll hear cartoon-inspired pratfalls, explosions, and mock-profanity that would be right at home in a Bugs Bunny classic.

The most noticeable–and enjoyable–sound is probably that of the audience laughing when you make a fool of your clueless neighbor. The soundtrack made less of an impression on me, but I suppose the jazzy background tunes do help set the lighthearted mood.

At a size of less than 19MB, Neighbours From Hell is worth the download if you like lighthearted puzzle games, or even if you are an adventure game fan suffering from withdrawal due to the lack of good adventure games in the last few years. Setting traps for your bumbling neighbor is strangely satisfying.

So why is the title Neighbours From Hell when there is only one neighbor in the game? I suspect the reason is that in order to enact your revenge on Flabby Fatso, you must yourself descend to his level.

Your very acts of defiance, your desperate struggle for vengeance, turn you into a Neighbor From Hell, too. Is that a little too philosophical? Tough. Take it up with the man next door.
