This demo is called a Multiplayer Test for a reason: Raven Software wants everyone to understand that it does not represent the final version of the game. After playing it online more times than I can count I hope they�re wrong, because Double Helix Multiplayer Test (DHMT) is big time fun.

Unlike the full first game in which you played as a character named John Mullins, DHMT allows you to be any one of a number of rough-looking dudes, ranging from a guy in a white flame retardant space suit to a cool cat who looks like Shaft, the fictional Harlem-based private investigator.

The download installed without so much as a hiccup. Options for graphics and sound were plentiful, as were the number of available servers, making getting into a game a snap. The only challenge was finding a server that wasn�t already full. You can play Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, or something called Infiltration, which is team-based play involving a �mission� like stealing important information contained in a briefcase. One side attacks; the other defends. Both sides kill. I stuck to DM and Team DM.

The demo contains only one map (naturally) but it�s more than enough to give you a feel for the action, which occurs on the upper floors of some kind of office tower. While most of the action takes place indoors, things can heat up on the roof, too. But watch your step. If you fall off the roof you�ll die and have points deducted from your score.

Multiple body hit points and gobs of blood are still there. And, yes, you can still shoot off limbs, but the ability to decapitate a dude with a single well-placed shot from a nine-millimeter pistol was a bit much.
