soldnerdemo SOLDNER Secret Wars Gizli Savaş

A 2-map multiplayer beta demo for this first-person shooter where you command a special forces team.

After half a century of military interventions major countries like the United States of America or Russia are weary of their role as “World Police”. The consequences of their military actions for their economy, national security, and internal ethnic conflicts let to the conclusion to tune down their military campaigns.

Due to that more and more countries choose unconventional warfare by using secret special forces. Military success is no longer made by major countries but by small and highly specialized mercenary forces.

In “SLDNER – Secret Wars” the player takes over the command of such a special forces team. As the Commander he leads a small high tech army consisting of soldiers, light armored vehicles, helicopters and VTOLS (Vertical Take Off and Landing Airplanes) to fulfill a wide variety of mission types .

The players units are stationed on a multi purpose ship which is camouflaged as a merchantman to allow unrestrained travel of the seas to get their forces to the area of operation.

The complete simulation of a complex political world system allows to create a dynamic campaign: each decision of the player, each success or failure has direct effect on the gameflow. In addition the player has the ability to gain access to the latest weapon systems and technology, which currently exist in the research centers of the weapon industry only.DEMO REVIEW
I like to think my computer can run the latest games pretty well. I mean, it runs Far Cry and UT2K4 just fine. Unfortunately the Soldner multiplayer demo is beyond my meagre PC.

Upon running the game, I was faced with a splash screen. For 7 minutes. I timed it. In this time my hard disk churned away like a mutant garbage disposal unit. Suddenly a voice said “Zoldnerr!”. I was thrilled. So I set up the options using the functional but still below par menu system. I tried to join a multiplayer game, but you have to register a nickname, or so it seemed. After many tries and many timeouts, I tried just logging in without registering. It worked. I was in!

Two servers appeared, so I tried to join the server with the smaller ping. This also timed out multiple times. I gave up and decided to make myself a LAN server just to test it out. This proved difficult, as there is no way of starting a server in-game.

Alt-tabbing, I waited for about 5 minutes for the HDD to churn some more garbage. Finally I regained control of the system and started a dedicated server, which took about 2 minutes to start. Churning once more, I re-entered the game and joined my own server. After many minutes of loading, I was able to enter the actual game and join a team. However it took about a minute for me to be able to control the character.

I was faced with the equipment buying menu. I chose a Deagle and an AK47, then joined the game. I was standing in a building, bare save for a table and chairs. It was the carpet that caught my attention. It was made of grass. That’s right, the grass grows right through the floor of the building, still swaying in the wind. I was also unable to move, look or shoot.

After a while I decided to join the opposite team. Success! I could move around! Switching to my pistol, the game froze for about 10 seconds. Firing the pistol also required about a second of loading beforehand. Doors flicked open and closed instead of swinging – a lot of improvements are yet to be made.

My AK47 had mysteriously disappeared, along with my money. I captured an objective point and gained some money. With the money I bought a Panzerfaust RPG. To my satisfaction, the tree I blew up fell backwards into another tree, which fell onto the roof of a building.

The roof was destroyed, along with a section of wall. To get more money, I needed to capture another objective point. This would have required about 10 more minutes of running through the countryside, so I gave up and quit the game. Quitting back to windows took about 8 minutes.

Overall, the Soldner demo stole from me 52 minutes of my life, my AK47 and my money. I want it all back.
